I’m looking to get into architecture as I feel the career would interest me, and I have been told by many that I should get into design as I have a good eye for detail and I enjoy computing and drawing.
I have found two suitable self study courses, one being Architectural and Building Drawing Intermediate Diploma and the other being Architectural Development Diploma. I just wonder if anyone experienced in architecture is able to tell me the main differences between the courses, and would a diploma be enough to start me off in this career?
I am willing to learn, however I don’t want to be forking out £1000+ to take a course that wont even benefit me, or will only take me to University, as Ive been there before and didn’t enjoy it. What are the likely prospects after completing a course like this? Has anyone done a similar self study course in construction and found it got them access into the job they wanted? Any help would be appreciated.

I will try and keep brief.. We had a conservatory which was literally coming away from our wall. The conservatory was built onto our neighbours existing conservatory which we have found was built on our boundary !! Mmmmh. This was all in place prior to any of us (me or neighbour) buying property. That said we had planning permission and building inspector involved throughout our new build, we also had a structural engineer involved due to ground being too soft and we had to get a raft designed and built for our new extension. We were oblivious of party wall act but gave our neighbour verbal notice of our works..only 1 week, but she seemed happy with things and told us to go ahead. Since our work she now has a crack in the existing wall on our boundary, she admits she previously had a crack there but sas it is much worse and that her patio doors are now causing problems closing and feels her wall has dropped. She has hired a party wall surveyor and advised we will pay for this. We have peviously, in writing stated we will repair the crack and realign doors and re visit in 12 months time and repair again if required at our cost but she still seems adamant that a survey is required. Not sure what she expects of us considering her foundations when exposed were even less than our original building which was falling apart!. Any help out there?
