I am looking in to becoming a surveyor, please don’t think bad of me but I’ve been an estate agent for 5 years and really want a career that is a little bit more respected and changeling. I understand that it could be years off and quite a bit of money to eventually become a surveyor, however I am thinking about undertaking a BTEC Advanced Certificate in Surveying and Estimating.

This would be a distance-learning course and can be completed within a year, can anyone advise me if this is worth while in order to get my foot in the door in the surveying industry? More to the point is the qualification recognized by the industry or is it a bit of a waste of time?

If I was to be successful and achieve a BTEC how hard is it realistically for me to get in to the industry? I am based in Kent and appear to have limited opportunities in the surrounding areas. Once employed I would then want to embark on a distant learning degree to become property surveyor but again am unsure if an employer would want me to do this, should I do this before joining the industry? IE BTEC, then Degree then look for a job. I know this may seem stupid questions but I am concerned that if I spend the next year doing a BTEC and it not to be worth, ie not respected in the industry and wouldn’t assist me in getting a job I am wasting time.

I am only 26 but do want a career and not just a job. Any advice or assistance that you can offer me would be very helpful.
