Hi i have some queries regarding construction training courses i hope somone might be able to give me some advice about.

At the moment i’m working as a carpenter for a small building firm and have done for 5 years having completed NVQ3 in it.

I am now looking to train as a constuction manager and my firm agreed to let me take half a day off a week to do the CIOB L4 course in Site Management.

I visited Reading Uni recently and was told i was rather over qualified for the CIOB course and the qulaification it gave wasnt really what i was after for moving up the career ladder.

I then talked about an HNC which i was told had now gone to FdSc Foundation Degree in Constuction Management. This is a two year course attending one day a week. You can then have the option of completing another 2 years to gain a full degree.

I Then looked on Southampton Uni’s website and they offer a two year HNC and a 5 year Full degree, both in Construction Management.

Whats confusing me now is that for the same 2 years i can achieve a HNC at Southampton or an FdSc at reading, the latter being a far higher qualification i understand?

Any advice you guys have regarding which route to take would be brilliant as i am pretty lost now.

Many thanks, Simon
