This is an awesome thread. Does anyone else have any more examples?

I used to live in Maastricht, the Netherlands, and an old Dominican church there was turned into a Selexyz bookstore.

Hi there,

I’m looking for examples (ideally, with photos) of decorative interior water fountains / displays in large hospitals. Examples within Canada would be most helpful.

I work in a major hospital that is considering a large water display, but we have received pushback regarding bacteria/health&safety issues. However, we’d like to look into what other hospitals have done.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Hey guys, I’m working on a project right now trying to get cost estimates for marketing for a hypothetical high-rise condo project. Just to give you a brief description, my project revolves around getting cost estimates for portions of an upscale high-rise condo development. This hypothetical building would include many high-end features and would use high-grade materials in its construction. There will also be a small retail and commercial component. Some of the amenities we were thinking about might be a theater and maybe car elevators.

To find out marketing costs, I need to contact some big name marketers that have done the general marketing and advertising for large scale developments. This would also include company branding, events management, and website design. I would really appreciate all help in these sectors. I need the cost estimates for what the company would typically charge for a 12 month period (or if it applies, project lifetime):

1. General marketing and advertising (including marketing research, plan, strategy, and public relations, such as press releases) – keep in mind that we’re targeting a narrow high-end niche which may require more in-depth target marketing

2. Company branding (including logo design and project name) – We would definitely emphasize branding, as it may be necessary to rebrand throughout the project lifetime along with changes in the marketplace

3. Events marketing and expenses (As this is a high-end project, these events could involve a car lottery to those who sign contracts, catering from upscale restaurants, and other high-end incentives).

4. Event Management

5. Website Design (The website would be extremely interactive, with a flash component, ability to see renderings, floor plans, maybe a 360 degree room detailing and fly through. Also have contact abilities and RSS feeds).

I know you guys personally aren’t going to know the cost information, but if you could direct me to some firms, that would be great.

Thanks in advance!

What works what does not.

I am asking about residential towers, not townhomes ot low rise buildings, but with the market dried up, what is it that attracts you to a building, or what attracts other people to a building.

assuming a city center or near city center locatiom, what are you interested in?

is it height?
is it layout
is it price per SF
is it amenities
is it balconies
is it view
is it developer
is it history vs modern
is it own vs rent
is it cost per SF
is it total cost

give some feed back and maybe it will affect what is proposed in your city as we emerge frrom this economic slow down.
giving your location certainly helps as well because we do not know unless you tell us.

I think I remember reading elsewhere that the concrete is so bad, some of the floors and columns are sagging visibly. This continuation of work is supposedly to ‘pretty’ it up so that it doesn’t look bad. I’m guessing some work will be done to ensure it doesn’t collapse as well, but I highly doubt it’s going to be used for much more than communications antennae.

Can anyone help point me in the right direction? Or for that matter is anyone using anything useful to help project manage your portfolio?

I have been googling and searching when the time permits. I’ve noticed companies like e-Builder who seem to have a web based capital software package. If I’m looking to manage scope, cost, and budget on a ground up where I’m the acting owner project manager would this be good?

The project is 200MM spread across 4 years. We are currently in SD and design is looking to finish up next year in Nov.

Anyone out there using something similiar or have had recent success?

I assume it’s being finished as a hotel? Finding an experienced chain to operate the hotel could be difficult, but I doubt they are concerned about that. I still wonder how they could possibly fill all those rooms.

Some many people are excited about the hospital to be coming to grand rapids. it’s gonna do so many wonderful things for the area

First the ones I like: I.M. Pei, Daniel Libeskind, Frank Gehry, Brad Cloepfil, Thom Mayne, Cesar Pelli, and Richard Meyer. They are all embrace creativity and allow progressive elements to flow in their projects. They understand that architecture, like any other art form, must evolve and change with new ideas and technology. Other big names in the USA are people like David Childs (ugh! Freedom Tower is unimaginative and boring), Robert A.M. Stern (double ugh!! has an ego that won’t fit in the entire state of CT), and Michael Graves (gotta love Target). Maybe it would be a better question to ask as to what are the 10 best architectural firms in the USA. More often than not, the best (modern) architecture comes out of Europe. We still like to tie the hands of the talented men and women here in the USA–we call it “value engineering”. I call it “dumbing down”.

I usually say Robert Stern, Bobby McAlpine and Greg Tankersley. You can see they’re of a different vein. They all enjoy tradition.

When I sketch my own spec projects they are always more in line with your guys. I draw them with at least as much attention to efficient manufacture/construction process as the form. If your guys would put part of their team on designing with construction methodolgy outfront I’d agree.
